Background: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is one of the most common metabolic disorders in the West Asia countries and is associated with long term complications like retinopathy with potential loss of vision, nephropathy leading to renal failure, peripheral neuropathy with risk of foot ulcers, amputation and charcot joints, and autonomic neuropathy causing gastrointestinal, genito-urinary and cardiovascular symptoms, and sexual dysfunction. Nuclear Medicine plays an important role by being able to make general and specific contributions to the management of patients with diabetes and the evaluation of many of its consequences

Purpose of the Training Course:

The course is organized to provide intensive practical and theoretical training to nuclear medicine physicians from less developed countries of the region in the field of Nuclear Medicine. On completion of the training course the participants will be able to:

  • Know the etiology, natural course, diagnosis and general management of patients with diabetes.
  • Use in -vitro nuclear medicine procedures in the management and diagnosis of DM and its complications.
  • Use in -vivo radionuclide techniques in management and diagnosis of DM and its complications.
  • Select appropriate protocols.

Participants' qualifications:

The course is intended for practicing nuclear medicine physicians, who at least have access to gamma camera-computer systems. Participating countries are encouraged to submit more than one application to provide scope for IAEA final selection. As the course will be conducted in English, participants should have no difficulty following lectures and expressing themselves in this language.

Nature of the course:

The training course includes coverage of a wide range of aspects of In vitro and In vivo radionuclides techniques in the management of diabetic patients. The lecturers include several physicians who have extensive experience in Nuclear Medicine.

Application Procedure:

Nominations should be submitted in duplicate on the standard IAEA application form for training courses. Completed forms should be endorsed by and returned through the official channels established (the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the national Atomic Energy Authority or the office of the United Nations Development Programme). They must be received by the International Atomic Energy Agency, P.O. Box 100, A-1400, Vienna, not later than 12 November, 2001. Nominations received after that date or applications sent directly by individuals or by private institutions cannot be considered. Advanced nominations by facsimile (+43-1-26007), telex (1-12645) or e-mail (IAEO@IAEA1.IAEA.OR.AT) are welcome. The facsimile/telex/e-mail should contain the following basic information about the candidate: name, age, sex, academic qualifications, present position including exact nature of duties carried out, proficiency in English and full working address (including telex, facsimile and telephone numbers) to enable the IAEA to make preliminary evaluation of the candidates.

Language Certificate:

In the case of countries in which English is not an official or customary language, nominations must be accompanied by a separate certificate of the candidate’s proficiency in English. This certificate must be issued by a language school or cultural institution, or an embassy of a country in which the language of the course is spoken.

Administrative and financial arrangements:

Nominating Governments will be informed in due course of the names of the selected candidates and at that time full details will be given on the procedures to be followed with regard to administrative and financial matters. During their attendance at the course, participants from developing countries, eligible to receive technical assistance, will be provided by the IAEA with a stipend sufficient to cover the cost of their accommodation, food and minor incidental expenses. The IAEA will also pay the full cost of their air travel, economy class, from their home countries to Abu Dhabi, UAE and return. Nominating Governments must be prepared to defray the cost of shipment of accumulated course materials to the participants’ home countries. The organizers of the course do not accept liability for the payment of any cost or compensation that may arise from damage to or loss of personal property, or from illness, injury, disability or death of a participant while he/she is traveling to and from or attending the course, and it is clearly understood that each government, in nominating participants, undertakes responsibility for such coverage. Governments would be well advised to take out insurance against these risks.
